Ever since my first sleepover when I was in elementary school, I’ve been working on my packing skills. Over the years, I was lucky enough to travel often to different destinations and for different reasons: sleepovers at friend’s house in another city, going to music festivals with friends, holidays with my boyfriend, and surprise trips to the beach in the middle of the day. Needless to say, I’ve perfected my packing technique and today I can pack everything I need in a blink of an eye. Still, it doesn’t matter where I’m headed, there are some things I can’t live (and leave) without.

Beach trips

These are some of my favourite surprise trips during the summer because there is no better way to get the most out of a hot day than to spend it at the beach with your friends and your significant other. If I have time, I always put on my bikini before I leave my home (there never seems to be enough space for me to change in a changing room), and I pack fresh undies in my bag. A huge towel is a must because I love being wrapped in it when I get out of the water, and an old blanket is a beach essential too, as we can all play cards or get our snacks out. I usually wear comfy beach kaftans and flip-flops, but if I’m in my jeans and tee, the jeans come off the moment my feet hit the sand (or I roll them up to my knees).

A weekend away

I love weekend trips because I don’t need my suitcase. I manage to pack everything I need in a simple duffel bag (my favourite duffel bag has wheels because I use it often and I hate carrying it around). Comfy sweats and a huge tee are my ‘sleeping gear’, and during the day I mostly wear shorts or leggings. I also always pack a nice pair of jeans (sometimes skinny, sometimes boyfriend jeans) and a simple sleeveless drape blouse. I have a hard time choosing between my favourite glamorous mini party dresses (Should I wear satin? Sequins? Metal mesh?), but I always pack my strappy stiletto heels because I love how elegant and sexy they make me look.

Festival essentials

The best part about the festivals is the overall boho atmosphere: flowers crowns, messy hair, and comfy clothes everywhere you look. This is why I choose clunky sandals, plain old graphic tees, ripped denim shorts, and sexy bikinis as they can serve as bras if it gets too hot in the front rows. I must have a crossbody bag with me because I don’t want to juggle my phone, money, tissues, and hair pins all night long. A crossbody bag also allows me to bring a spare pair of socks and a spare tee in case I get wet or cold. And speaking of getting wet and cold, I usually have my bomber jacket with me – it’s trendy, cute, and useful.

I have been working really hard to get where I am today. I remember when I first got home from holidays after spending months at the campus and I brought pretty much all of my clothes with me. It’s no fun when you have to drag your oh-so-heavy suitcase up and down the flights of stairs, believe me, and I wore less than half of what I packed. Try to keep your ‘traveling gear’ to a minimum, and remember: the less things you pack for your trip, the more space in your bags for the souvenirs on your way back.

  1. The older I get, the less I pack when I travel. The last time we traveled we were a family of 4 at the time, and I managed to get all our clothes for a week long trip into one checked bag and 2 carry ons using the burrito wrap method. I love the clothes you picked out! Thanks for sharing.
