I love where we live – especially in the summer months. Honestly, there isn’t too much of a need to plan big getaways, there is so much to do here on Long Island! But even though I have lived here almost my whole life, there was one place I was really hoping to get to this summer! So a few weekends ago we took a Day Trip to Fire Island.

In this house, we love the Lego Brand. We actually just got the Lego Batman Movie DVD (and watched it on a recent car trip) and we were so lucky to have visited Legoland Florida twice this past winter. I do miss my New York family that migrated south to Orlando, but having cousins in Florida does have its perks! So use Lego-lovers were so excited to be invited to revisit the Legoland Discovery Center in Westchester, New York to spend a day riding, building and exploring!

My family loves amusement parks and my kids love rides. They also can’t get enough of the pool! So I knew this summer we wanted to try a full-on water park for the first time. This week we decided to venture to Splish Splash in Calverton, New York for an awesome day of water rides!

I am a beach girl. I can sit in the sand literally all day. My kids love the beach too, but we also spend a lot of summer days at the pool. Honestly, managing elementary age kids in a pool is often easier than keeping them safe on a large beach and in the ocean.

When we head to the beach, I have the packing down. If you missed it, read my beach essentials post here, everything you need to bring and great packing tips too! Today, I am going to share with you our must-haves for your day out at the local pool!

I love traveling with my little ones, but sometimes mom and dad need a vacation! Last fall we took a longer getaway to Las Vegas, and recently we went on short holiday to the North Fork of Long Island.

I live in a suburb of New York City. We can be in Manhattan in less than an hours train ride. We live about a 10 minute drive to the closest ocean beach. And in less than two hours, we can drive out to the North Fork of Long Island – rich with farms, marinas, and lots and lots of vineyards!

On the East End of Long Island, there are so many wineries and tasting rooms to visit. About three years ago we discovered the best tasting room out that way – Bedell Cellars. We had been longing to return, and I was super excited to recently be hosted by Bedell for an afternoon of wine tasting and a behind the scenes tour of their amazing facility.

I’m pretty reserved, and normally wouldn’t brag about being an expert in anything but one thing I can say I have down pat!

Beach Packing.

I am definitely an expert in getting a family ready for the beach and on to the sand!

Little man has a March birthday, and I started taking him to the beach his very first summer. When he was 5 months old, we spent a week at the Outer Banks with #thegirlfriends. We are so lucky to travel often to Atlantic City, NJ and Naples, FL; and to have spent last August in Hawaii. But we are even luckier that we live a 10-minute drive from an Atlantic Ocean beach!

We love hitting the beach as a family, and here are our MUST-HAVES for any family beach trip!

This spring we will be so busy with the kids’ sports (baseball and golf), special occasions (Communion, Mother’s Day, family birthdays) and end of school events. I literally just sat down with my Cozi app, school calendar and sports schedules to see if I could get ahead of the game! So this upcoming week, when the kids are off for Easter and Passover, I am super excited (although a tad nervous) to have whole days available to plan fun local outings!

Contrary to popular opinion, fall is definitely NOT my favorite season. I love the heat, the beach, the pool, shorts, flip-flops, and tanning – all things summer related! I can deal with spring, especially late spring, when it’s almost summer. I legit hate the winter. I hate the cold, dealing with coats, the snow, ice, and when it gets dark early – I really am one of those people that runs on Vitamin D and the winter just bums me out.

So I think it a bit crazy how people go gaga over fall (which doesn’t officially start until September 21 despite what Starbucks says). And if I have my way, shorts and flip flop weather will linger into October as well! I think its supposed to be in the high 70s here in New York this week! Yay!

But even I will admit there are a few things about fall I look forward to doing each year with my family. Activities that are tucked between sweaty beach weather, and the bundled up/indoor fun of the winter. Some of the specific places I am about to mention are in my area (Long Island, New York), but the ideas can translate to  any town! So here is my list of four family fall activities that even I, a summer girl, can love.
