Let’s face it, a long flight with a young one is not anyone’s favorite part of a trip. A means to an end, yes, but I know that my kids are a total crapshoot when it comes to enjoying a long flight. Sometimes they will hunker down with their headphones, giving you hours to relax. But when the boredom (or hunger) sets in, it is best to be prepared!

Last summer, we spent two weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii. We did so many awesome things, I had to break my MUST-DO post into two segments. Last week, I posted about the Best Big Island Beaches, and today I am writing about the other activities you don’t want to miss if you are traveling to the Big Island!

It’s been over six months since we have traveled to Hawaii and not a day goes by where we don’t talk about that trip! It was truly amazing in every way you dream about a 3-week trip to this magical state.

A vacation to Hawaii took a lot of planning and I wanted to get the most out of our time on each island. I am so indebted to all the great blogs I read (check out my Hawaii Pinterest board for all things Aloha) and as always to Fodor’s Hawaii  for helping me plan our activities. I am so excited to share our best tips and help other folks plan their awesome Hawaiian adventures! Since launching this site, I have written about the best Maui activities, and a great itinerary if you are traveling the Road to Hana. Today I give you the best beaches on the Big Island.

If you have been following along, you know that our family was so fortunate to spend three weeks in Hawaii last summer. We visited Maui and The Big Island with our two kids, age 4 and 7. Needless to say, we had an awesome time. Most of my planning was done by searching Pinterest for family friendly blog posts offering advice of “must-dos” on the islands. I compiled a list of things that sounded interesting (and brought a 2016 Fodor’s Hawaii with us  ** affiliate link**) and made our way through the many awesome activities we hoped to do. We also discovered other great things and I am thrilled to share them all!

P.S. This list is great for anyone traveling to Maui – honeymooners, adventurers, couples, etc!

About Me, Travel

Recently, I have seen some other travel bloggers putting together both 2016 travel recaps and 2017 travel resolutions, and I figured what a fun way to look back at the year and all of the great trips we have done! And of course I have a few adventures I am excited about in 2017! I only just launched this blog in October, and did not get an opportunity to write about everything we did in the first three-quarters of the year! So without further adieu… I give you the Momma To Go 2016 Travel Recap!

In case you haven’t realized, we love to travel! And the question I often get is how we can afford to do so many great things? Especially with regards to our three-week trip to Hawaii.

Although Hawaii is part of the United States, it is not a cheap place to visit. As you can imagine, flights are expensive, as are fancy resorts. But even simple things, like Doritos ($5.99 a bag, anyone?) are marked up due to the expensive costs of shipping goods to the islands.

But I found there are some legitimate ways to save money when visiting Hawaii. Simple things that anyone can do to save a little here and there! Here are my tips:

Our family vacations tend toward the more laid back. We are a sit-on-the-beach and relax kind of family rather than a sightseeing clan. Our trip to Hawaii was no exception. Pre-trip we did outline some cool things to see and do, but our intention was to Live Like A Local for three weeks in the paradise that is Hawaii. The only big activity that we planned was driving the Road to Hana.

Years ago, I had heard about the Road to Hana from my friend Susan, who drove it with small kids in tow. From her description, I had pictured it as a windy road amidst waterfalls and the canopies of the rainforest.

And it is.

I am so excited to write my first travel related post here on Momma To Go. I anticipate that is what I will mainly focus on (with fitness and parenting being a close second), but over the last week I have been trying to get out seasonal content (Halloween costumes #1 and #2) and had both kids sick, so I am only just writing this now!

I have so many important travel stories and great tips and tricks I want to share with you all. But I need to start with an article that will help you not only get the most out of your trip, but save you a ton of money as well.
