There are so many things to love about Italy. The coffee, the food, the historic sights… but one of my favorites, is the wine! I love Prosecco, a cold white wine on the piazza, or a deep red with a big bowl of pasta. Yes, only in Italy can I tolerate … no enjoy, red wine.

So when our awesome DMC at Exclusively Italy arranged for us a vineyard tour and wine tasting, I knew this was going to be a highlight of our trip!

Wine Tasting in Italy

You can taste great wine all over Italy. Many people think of Tuscan wineries, but this is a country where the culture and food vary by region, as does the wine. On this trip we visited the Bertagna Vineyard and Wine Cellar, after our day out in Verona. This vineyard is located in Cavriana, about a half hour from Verona or a two hour drive from Milan. This vineyard is in the Northern Italian region of Lombardy.

At Bertagna they grow their grapes on over 13 hectares of land. So the grounds are picturesque, with vineyards up and down the hillside. Honestly it reminded me a lot of Napa Valley.

We had a guided, English tour through part of the vineyard and around the property. Our guide explained to us many details of the winemaking process. She showed us where the grapes are processed and the barrels where the wine was stored. The 2014 harvest was about to go to bottling. Making wine really is a long process!

After a short tour, we got the good part – the tasting! We were guided into a centuries old stone cellar and given an extensive list of wines from which we could choose a few to taste.

We meandered through the list, starting with a delicious rose (that ended up being my favorite), sampling some white, and then red wines. To accompany our vino, we were given focaccia drizzled with their olive oil (they also produce and sell the most delicious olive oil you could ever hope to taste), along with some cured meats and cheeses. These products are local to the region, and the proprietor was slicing the meats fresh in front of us!

Our visit to Cantina Bertagna was an unparalleled culinary experience! The wine, food, and olive oil were outstanding. This is WHY you travel to Italy.

Our hosts were so attentive and gracious. We ended up purchasing many bottles of wine and oil to gift to family, and to enjoy during the rest of our Italy trip. Sadly, they do not sell Bertagna wines in the United States, and the cost to ship  six bottles home was very expensive (85 Euro). Although it is worth noting that these delicious wines only ranged in price from 6 – 18 Euro for a standard sized bottle. Very reasonable!

Everything we tasted. Olive Oil on the Left, followed by Rose, whites and then reds.

If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Northern Italy, I highly recommend a visit to the Winery Bertagna. I know you will not be disappointed!

  2. This sounds amazing! Wine tasting is one thing I didn’t do while in Italy last year (other than the random wines we had at dinner and bought in stores, which were still ah-mazing!). When I go again, I definitely want to visit some vineyards 🙂

  5. I’ve done a couple wine tastings in Australia, and they’re such a fun experience! I’m helping my parents plan a trip around Italy for their 30th anniversary, so I’ll definitely have to recommend that they add Bertagna to their list!
