Momma To Go would like to thank Bedell Cellars for hosting hubby and I for wine tasting at Bedell Cellars. As always, all opinions are my own.

I live in a suburb of New York City. We can be in Manhattan in less than an hour train ride. We live about a 10 minute drive to the closest ocean beach. And in less than two hours, we can drive out to the North Fork of Long Island – rich with farms, marinas, and lots and lots of vineyards!

On the East End of Long Island, there are so many wineries and tasting rooms to visit. About three years ago we discovered the best spot for Wine Tasting on Long Island – Bedell Cellars. We had been longing to return, and I was super excited to recently be hosted by Bedell for an afternoon of wine tasting and a behind the scenes tour of their amazing facility.

Wine Tasting Long Island: A Visit To Bedell Cellars

Bedell Cellars was founded by the Bedell family in 1980. In 2000, the winery was bought by Michael Lynne and the facility was completely remodeled. At Bedell, the entire wine production process is done on site. From growing in the 75 acres of sustainable vineyards, to the processing, fermenting, barreling and bottling! It’s all done right there!

We started our visit to Bedell Cellars with a tasting flight of five wines. The first was a sparkling rose, followed by a Viognier. The third wine was a white blend called Gallery. We then tried a Cabernet Franc (apparently Long Island is an ideal growing place for Cab Franc) and finally their bold red blend, Taste Red.

I honestly enjoyed all of the varietals, the sparkling rose being my favorite. So much that I purchased a bottle to bring home. Hubby loved the Cab Franc, so he picked up one of those as well.

You can view the tasting flight details here. The tasting room is open 7 days a week and accepts walk-ins. A tasting flight is $20. Reservations are recommended for parties of 6 or more.

For us, the experience isn’t just about the wine. Its about the service, décor, food and atmosphere. And in all those areas Bedell does not disappoint!

The décor is upscale and modern. The tasting room has several levels, so you can hang in the bar area, or head to one of the upstairs nooks for a more intimate experience.

PRO-TIP: Call ahead to reserve if you want an upstairs table.

The winery also has an outdoor seating area, overlooking the vineyards. Unfortunately it was raining on both our visits, so we were relegated to the inside!

After our tasting, Patrick gave us a tour of the facility. I was amazing at how this is truly a one-stop shop! You could look out the window at where the grapes were being grown, tour where they are fermented and barreled, and then see the machine and assembly line where the wines are filled, corked, labeled and boxed. You can’t get more locally produced than that!

I love learning about wine making. I find it all so intriguing.  But what I also found so interesting about Bedell is their commitment to being a certified sustainable facility. Patrick explained some of their sustainable practices.

On our tour, we learned about Bedell’s use of organic yeast in the production of their wines. I wasn’t sure what organic yeast is – its yeast from natural ingredients in the environment that are used to ferment the wine! I thought that was pretty neat!

Bedell Cellars also uses sustainable corks from South America. The art on their wine labels are all from NYC commissioned artists. This label is was my personal favorite:

Wine Tasting on Long Island is NOT Napa Valley, but Bedell is the one Long Island winery that mimics the California wine experience. It should be your first stop on your Long Island wine tour.

And… your second stop should be the Tap Room at Corey Creek!

While visiting Bedell Cellars, our tour guide mentioned that Bedell had just bought the Corey Creek winery, and turned it into an upscale and modern tasting room! It was just up the road from Bedell, so we knew we had to pay a visit!

The Tap Room at Corey Creek serves six wines on tap . The varietals are housed in collapsible, recyclable kegs. On our recent visit, hubby and I each tried a flight of three tastes ($5), which we loved. I chose Rose, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Hubby chose Chardonnay, Merlot and Carbonic Cab Sauv. The bartender also let us try the sixth wine on tap, which wasn’t my taste, but apparently is very popular.

When we visited the Tap Room at Corey Creek, the first thing my husband said was, “whoever designed this did a great job.” He’s totally right, the space is really cool, think Brooklyn hipster meets the North Fork of Long Island! I can see that this place will be VERY POPULAR this summer, again it was pouring out and we did not get to enjoy all of the outdoor space.

The Tap Room at Corey Creek is not a full-scale retail winery, but you can purchase re-usable growlers that can be refilled with your favorite wine on tap!

PRO-TIP: If you are hungry, eat when you visit Bedell Cellars, they offer small plates, where Corey Creek only had small snacks (jars of nuts and dry fruit) for purchase. Neither venue allows outside food.

Hubby and I snuck away to the North Fork for a night without the kids, but both of these wineries are family friendly. They also allow leashed dogs! I know we will be back to both Bedell and Corey Creek this summer! And if you can’t get out to the end of Long Island right now, you can shop the wines here:

  1. Oooo this looks like it’d be the place to be for the summer. I have yet to go to a full-scale winery. My cousin just started working in New York, so I may have to pay her a visit, and recommend that we go to Bedell! And I’m all about rose, so I’m definitely going to have to try the sparkling one you recommended 🙂

  2. I’ve been hearing so much about New York’s wineries, but never on Long Island–always near the Finger Lakes! That Tap Room is SO my style–would love to have a glass or two there!

Ive never been to the Finger Lakes! Long Island wines have come a long way in the last 15 years. They used to be terrible to be honest. Bedell really is trying to reach the upscale and younger audience. Plus the wines were really good!

I’ll have to tell some of my friends about this place. It looks really lovely and it can be hard to pick a nice winery when there are so many on long island. Thanks for a great share for the wine enthusiasts out there.

  6. What a good experience to see the process of wine making and tasting wine. I don’t drink wine so much as I only know the wine in the supermarket and restaurant! I want to try this wine! If I lived near here, I definitely would visit here soon.

  9. I was a bit of a cretin before I moved to the US, I’d never even heard of a flight. Although, I’d only seen beer and cider flights before, so this is something new. I love doing winery and cidery tours, they’re fascinating!
